I will remain here on the sidelines where
each Saturday I witness my son glide
over slide tackles with a cocky stride
to underscore his skill: There, father. There.
I will sink into some abandoned chair
beneath a maple tree as night draws close,
and I will find my solace, I suppose,
remembering the passes, the roulettes,
the back-heel flicks, the goals, the calls he gets,
no point in minding how his shadow grows.
