Consolation at Dusk

PEDRO POITEVIN

I will remain here on the sidelines where
each Saturday I witness my son glide
over slide tackles with a cocky stride
to underscore his skill: There, father. There.

I will sink into some abandoned chair
beneath a maple tree as night draws close,
and I will find my solace, I suppose,
remembering the passes, the roulettes,
the back-heel flicks, the goals, the calls he gets,
no point in minding how his shadow grows.

A mathematician by profession, Pedro Poitevin is a bilingual poet and translator originally from Guatemala. His poems in English have appeared in Rattle and River Styx, among others. Currently Associate Professor of Mathematics at Salem State University, he lives in Marblehead, Massachusetts.
